The sky had turned purple by the time her frenzy ended. She knelt in the surf covered in blood. She had ripped Dillon to pieces trying to get every last drop and when she saw what she had done she got sick coughing up a good portion of the blood she had just gained.

She splashed water over her hands and face trying to wash off the blood, but all she could see was red.

"What have I done, oh god what have I done?" she wanted to cry She wanted to scream. She wanted to get up and run as far as she could go and find some dark corner to hide in forever.

"Come away Adrianna, it's getting late." she felt a strong hand on her shoulder and when she turned she saw Jules standing there.

she had her moment to escape and like always Jules had found her.
she recoiled from his touch and wrapped her arms around her legs as tight as she could get them. She wanted to shrink away into a little and disappear forever.

" we must hurry Adrianna, the sun comes and the ship is waiting."

"No, I'm not going." she said.

She pulled her legs up, as close to her body as she could get them and wrapped her arms around her knees.
He stepped forward and made a motion as if he planned to pick her up by the midriff, but when she bowed her head he stopped.

"Sometimes we die," she said.

"Yes, sometimes even the immortals die." His voice sounded as if he were trying to force his words out of his throat. "Come with me now Adrianna, and we will talk about it."

"No Jules, let me stay."

"If you think for one minute I will let you meet final death like some pander, you have lost your mind child."

She could feel his thoughts turn to her and by shear will, he forced her to stand and take a step away from the water.

"Let me go Jules, What am I to you?"

"My childre, and I will not have you wasting my good vitae on this drama."

She took three more steps, fighting for all she was worth against his mind control. She looked down and saw that she had come to the place where she had mutilated Dillon and she froze, falling to her knees.

"Is this what you want me to be?" she sighed. The sand before her was stained red with Dillons blood. The very blood that cruised through her veins, making her stronger then even she realized.

"Its what you are, its what you always were my dear." He must have felt his control slipping because he seized her by the arm and pulled her to her feet.

"you disappoint me Adrianna, a girl of your spirit wanting to end immortality because you can't bare to kill your victims. I would have thought the elders would have broken you of that by now."

She thought about his words, and realized that she didn't really feel bad about Dillon. She had given him a chance to escape, she had toyed with his emotions and enjoyed the way he made her feel normal, but she couldn't feel sad that he was gone. Maybe that's what it was that was bothering her now, she couldn't feel anything for anyone and she wanted to feel. Even if it was Remorse, sad, happy? No those things didn't seem to apply anymore. And the way she felt had nothing to do with anything. It was something else that made her want to stay.

Jules was pulling her along the beach talking about what disappointment she had become. To think a childre of his wanting to kill herself, he couldn't understand why she would turn her back on the dark gift. Or she plan to accomplish by dying. for her own good, he would see that she would not be allowed out of his sight again.

"No"she said, she shook her arm and pulled free of his grasp. She ran back toward the water her eyes looking at the waves breaking on the shore. She could see the outline of white clouds against the purple sky and she knew that the first raises of sunlight were just below the horizon. A thrill passed up her spine and she smiled. Not the fake smile she had put on for Jules for a thousand nights, or even the fake smile she would give him for the next thousand years. It was a true smile, the type of smile that comes from contentment and happiness. The kind that can't be faked or suppressed. And she so wanted to suppress that smile right then. As quick as it came, it faded on its own when Jules placed an unwelcome hand on her shoulder.

She fell into the waves to escape his clutches. That was all she had ever wanted. If she lived a thousand more nights or a thousand years, Jules would always be there. He would search the world and every hiding place she could find to torment her. But there was one place he would never go, one hiding place she could put herself forever out of his reach. Thats what it was about she thought and he could never understand that.

She felt him push her under and hold her beneath the waves waiting for her to submit to his dominion. She scratched. She clawed. She reached with her fingers for anything that would help her escape his grasp and in the waves she found something. She took hold of the object floating in the surf and lunged straight up out of the water.

Once...

twice...

The third time, Jules collapsed backwards. His arms and legs had gone rigid and shook uncontrollably. There was no sign that any harm had befallen him except for a long sharp piece of driftwood protruding from his chest.

New Orleans, three nights later.

Adrianna lights a candle and sets it on the lid of a casket. She is dressed in a black sheath, V-cut in front, sleeveless and low cut in back revealing much of her white flesh. On her hands she is wearing long fishnet gloves with lace and a ring on each finger. Her hair, she has dyed a raven black, pulled back in a bun beneath a small hat with a half vale. She bows her head for a moment and is glad her male companion can't see the gleam in her eyes.

"Is this ok, I mean... I feel really weird... you said he was your husband?"

"Yes, Jules... he was too old for me you know." She bends and kisses the casket lid. "I'm taking him home, to be buried with my kin"

"Well, thats kool, I just feel a little weird I mean I didn't know you were married when we met... and well, he just died right?"

"Oh no," she giggles. "Jules has been dead for a long time, I'm just taking him home from overseas, that's all." She moves over to her male escort and gives him a reassuring hug. She could live a thousand more nights or even a thousand more years, knowing that Jules couldn't interfere. It was his turn to play the prisoner she thought and that gleam returned to her eyes.

" Whew... thats a relief, as long as you say its ok for us to go out then its cool with me. So what did your old man die of anyway?"

"Disappointment." She said smiling...

She pushed the corpse out of bed and it fell limp to the floor with a thud.

She was alone agian. It would always be this way, she thought. lonliness was part of the deal now. She climbed out of bed and stepped over the body as she gathered her clothes from the floor. she could go anywhere in the world right now and there was no one to interfere. Cascadia seemed like the best place to go. But they would look for her there. and when they found her, there was little doubt that they would give her final death for what she had done to jules.

She looked at the corpse laying on the floor, his eyes were staring at her. He looked so sad, she had to look away. and for a moment she felt something for him, but just as quick she realized what she was feeling was her own lonliness.

it would be this way now. if she lived a thousand years or a thousand more nights, she would meet people, toy with them, then find herself stepping over there cold body on her way out the door.

Every city she went to from here on, she would leave a trail of corpses, there was no escaping that. She had become what she had always feared. There was no remorse, no feelings beyond the rush she got from drinking every last drop of a victims blood. She was a monster.
and being that, it would only be a matter of time before the local prince or primogen called a hunt and she was killed for breaking some tredition she couldn't even begin to understand.

She would have to find someplace she could go, someplace where everything would be ok, and they would never find her, but where she wondered, who could she turn too?

She looked again at the corpse laying on the floor. a single tear rolled down her cheek.

"It's not my fault," she said as she walked out and closed the door.
