We're like an abused spouse who finally makes a run for it. We stood timidly at the door in our ragged, worn nightgown staring at you out of our one good eye, the one that wasn't puffing black and blue. We asked quietly if you're sure you didn't need anything from the cornerstore but your eyes never left the game on television. You sat in your oversized recliner, your knuckles still red from use, sweat standing out from your brow and you simply reminded us that you hit us because you LOVED us. We said we know you did, and you were right, but we clutched those car keys so tight they stung in our palms. We said we would be back with the cigarettes. And then we were gone. |
